There are 61 colleges and universities in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The University of South Carolina in Columbia was the largest university in the state with 29,599 enrolled for Fall 2010. Trident Technical College in North Charleston is the largest two-year college, with an enrollment of 15,790. The smallest institution is W. L. Bonner College, a Oneness Pentecostal-affiliated seminary, with an enrollment of 47 students. The oldest institution is the College of Charleston, founded in 1770 and chartered in 1785.

The majority of colleges and universities in South Carolina are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), but one is accredited by the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), one by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS), one by the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada (ATS), and two by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools. There are also 6 four-year and 2 two-year historically black colleges and universities.

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia are the only allopathic medical schools in the state and are accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). The University of South Carolina School of Medicine established a second campus in Greenville and matriculated its first class in 2012. The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine - Carolinas Campus in Spartanburg is the only college of osteopathic medicine in South Carolina and is accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg is the only chiropractic college in the state and is accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE). Charleston School of Law and the University of South Carolina School of Law are American Bar Association (ABA) approved law schools.
